What is Diabetes?

Did you know that cats and dogs can have diabetes, too? Like in humans, diabetes is caused by a lack of insulin or the body’s inability to make insulin which affects the level of glucose (sugar) in your pet’s blood.

Glucose is an important source of energy; it is created by the body as food is broken down. Diabetes usually only affects 1% of cats and dogs but experts believe it is on the rise. Commons signs of diabetes include loss of appetite and lethargy. The red flag – increased drinking and urinating.

Pets with diabetes can also develop cataracts, nerve damage and muscle wasting. The better an owner controls their pet’s diabetes, the more likely it is that the pet is NOT going to suffer from some of the side effects.

How do people control diabetes in their pets at home?

Believe it or not -almost the same way you would in humans. Veterinarians use the same medications and almost the same types of equipment and monitoring systems.

There are two ways to monitor your pet’s blood glucose at home:

Urine Test Strips: These strips test the amount of keytones in your pet’s urine. Insulin must be present in order to for your pet's body to utilize the glucose as fuel. If there is not enough insulin to utilize glucose, your pet's body begins to break down fat cells. As it breaks down the fat cells, keytones are made.

Glucometer: This hand held device tests the amount of glucose in the blood. Like in humans, you need a drop of blood on the test strip for the meter to determine the blood glucose level.

The AlphaTrack Glucometer is currently the only device made specifically for pets. This is a more accurate way of monitoring your pet’s blood glucose because you're actually testing the blood. It is important to talk to your veterinarian about this option to decide if it is right for you and your pet.

What about insulin injections?

Your veterinarian will tell you how much insulin to administer to your pet depending on the results of the urine test strips or blood glucose readings. Some clients make a log book of the date, time, test result readings and amount of insulin given. This is helpful to give the veterinarian so the doctor is given a clear view of how the blood glucose levels have been doing at home.

Like in humans, insulin in pets is administered every 12 hours. Getting your pet into a routine really helps to make giving the insulin injection easier for the pet owner.

It is important that insulin is stored properly. It should be kept in the refrigerator and taken out only to give the injection and immediately returned to cold storage. You should NEVER shake the insulin vial; instead roll it between your hands for a few seconds before drawing up the correct dosage.

What if I’m not comfortable monitoring my pet’s BG or administering the insulin at first?

Our specially trained pet sitters can come teach you how to take a BG reading and administer the insulin in the least stressful way for your pet. We will come as often as it takes until you feel confident caring for your pet.

Did you know that an astounding 80% of dogs and 70% of cats show signs of oral disease by age three?

Having your pet’s yearly dental exam is imperative to your pet’s health. Did you know dental disease can lead to systemic problems in your pet including heart, liver and kidney disease? Home dental care is one of the best ways to keep your pet’s teeth and gums healthy. We know this can be difficult, so we’ve put together some pointers that can help you maintain a healthy mouth for your pet.

Brushing Your Pet’s Teeth

Choose a pet tooth paste your pet will love. They come in many different flavors, so try a few and see which your pet likes the best. Pet tooth pastes have enzymes in them that help to break down tartar. These enzymes coupled with the manual removal of tartar when your brushing helps to keep their teeth healthy.

Introduce brushing slowly – You want to make your pet comfortable and not stress them out. Start by rubbing your finger or piece of gauze on your pet’s teeth. This will help get them use to you touching and handling their mouth and teeth. Make sure you to make these sessions short and positive; giving them lots of verbal praise when they’re calm and relax as your doing this.
Introduce a pet tooth paste as human tooth paste can cause an upset stomach in your furry friend. Let them lick the tooth paste off your finger and get used to the flavor. Then you can start applying it to their teeth.
You can replace a soft toothbrush designed for pets once they are receptive to your finger or you can continue with using gauze. Again, do this in short sessions and remember to praise them.
Now you’re ready to start brushing their teeth with the tooth paste and brush/gauze. Make sure your tooth brush or finger is at a 45 degree angle as you brush. If your pet resists, just do one or two teeth in the beginning and build yourself up to brushing their whole mouth. Keeping with making this a positive experience, continue to praise them.
Focus on the side of the tooth that faces you. Use circular motions as you brush each tooth. Don’t worry about brushing the side of the tooth that faces inside your pets tongue. Their tongue constantly in contact with this side of the teeth helps to keep tartar build up at bay.

Other ways to help keep your pet’s mouth healthy:

Dental Rinses: Rinses help fight plaque, maintain oral health, and freshen breath. They can be used with or without brushing and come in different size bottles. Talk to your veterinarian to see which one is best for your pet.

Dental Chews and Toys: As your pet chews on these specially designed dental chews and toys, they are helping to rub the tartar off their teeth, which mimics the action of brushing.

Dental Diets: These specially formulated diets help scrub away plaque as your pet eats them. They also help to reduce tartar, stain and build up and reduce bad breath. Talk to your veterinarian about beginning a dental diet for your pet.

If your pet is eating canned food, cut up some bite sized pieces and bake in at 350 degree oven about 30 minutes or until crispy.

Is your pet only eating kibble? No problem! Grind some kibble into a flour like consistency. Use a blender to mix with enough water to make a dough which can then be shaped into cookies and baked using the same directions as above.

If your pet doesn’t have allergy problems you can add oregano, carob, or parsley can be added to make the treats taste even better!

Dog Obedience - How To Teach Your Dog "Time Out"

We recently had a friend ask us how to stop her puppy from unwanted behaviors if she shouldn’t be using the crate for punishment. Here is her question:

“He has these barking and Indy 500 episodes so if I can't get him to chill out after a while, I tell him he is going to "time out..." I can see how it could be a mixed signal, but what else should I do? A child sleeps and plays in their room but when they are punished they are told to GO TO THEIR ROOM. What so you suggest I do when he is being "bad" or needs a time out?

Great question, Danielle! Every dog needs a job and we can help teach you a job for him that will be a great tool during the course of his life. All you need is a bathmat or small area rug for him to sit/lay on. Have him on a leash and walk him up to the mat, put him on it and tell him “Place.” Walk away while facing him about 3 feet. He must keep all 4 feet on the mat. Eventually, he can lay dog, sit or stand, but all 4 feet must be on it. In the beginning, he will walk right off because he doesn’t understand what you want him to do. So, you SAY NOTHING and using the leash guide him back on to the mat. Hold the leash loop in your right hand about belly height, slide your left hand along the leash to guide him back to the mat. It is very important not to repeat your command. You are teaching him that you say something ONCE and he is to do it or else he will learn you will make him do it. To release him from Place, say “(Insert Pet Name), OK!” and get excited and really praise him with lots of love when he returns to you because he did a great job!

Once he understands that he needs to stay there, you can start increasing how far away you are from Place and the length of time he has to stay there. At first you will keep the leash in your hand and stand as far away as the leash will let you. Once you are confident standing that far away, you can begin to upgrade to a longer leash and do it from further away. The most important thing you can do: If he gets up when you haven’t released him, take the leash, walk him back up to Place and reset him WITHOUT saying a word. His job is to stay there until you release him.

The good thing about using a mat is that it is portable, so you can bring it to your parents, your friends, a marketing event and the rules are the same: Stay right here until I release you. You will impress everyone with your well behaved dog in any environment.

Cheat to win! If you know you are going to be on the computer working, set Place up near you so the leash is within arms reach for you to correct him if he gets up.

It will be a lot of work in the beginning, but it is an amazing command. What will you do when your dog is full grown and the pizza man rings the door bell? Tell him, Place. What happens when you eat dinner, or you have company over and you don’t want him begging for food? Tell him, Place. If you drop a glass vase that shatters and he starts running over to inspect the noise? Tell him, Place. You have a car full of groceries and need to keep the front door open and don’t want to trip on him coming in and out of the house? Tell him, Place.

There are a million ways Place will be beneficial to you and your dog. He needs something to do to occupy his “free” time and you need him to be safe and well mannered at all times.

Flea Control - Do You Really Know What Your Getting From Online Veterinary Pharmacies?

On a recent trip to the pet store, I heard the woman in front of me say, “Oh, I need to grab (insert generic flea control product here). Something’s better than nothing, right?”

WRONG! When it comes to flea control, you need to know a lot about the product you will be applying to your pet’s skin BEFORE you apply it. Not knowing could end up costing you a lot of money. So here’s a list of things to consider before you purchase:

•How did the seller obtain the product?
The ads you see on TV for online pet pharmacies and big chain pet stores sound enticing, but do you know where they get their products from? The companies that produce Frontline, Revolution, Vectra, and most of the big brand flea control products ONLY sell their products to licensed veterinarians. “FDA has found companies that sell unapproved pet drugs and counterfeit pet products, make fraudulent claims, dispense prescription drugs without requiring a prescription, and sell expired drugs,” reports the FDA Website about online pharmacies. The product you put on your pet may be expired if you’re purchasing them from online companies, or even worse – regular cooking oil in counterfeit packing!

•Is the product backed by the manufacturer?
Did you know that when you purchase your flea/tick products from your veterinarian they are backed 100% by the manufacturer? What does that mean to you? Well, if your pet were to be allergic to the product, become ill from the product, or the product doesn’t work - the manufacturer will pay 100% of the subsequent veterinary bills due to the problem their product caused your pet. Guess what happens if you purchase your product from an online pharmacy or local pet store? Nothing. You are responsible for the veterinary bills because the manufacturers won’t honor their guarantee because their products were not purchased through a viable source, aka your veterinarian.

•Are you using the correct dosage on the correct animal?
Throughout the years in the veterinary industry, we have seen it time and time again when pet parents buy the over the counter flea products for their pets, tragedy can strike. Thinking they will save some money, they buy the large dog size tubes and put it on all the animals in their house – even the small dogs and cats! Each tube has the correct medication for that specific species and size. Putting that product on a cat will cause seizures and sometimes death because the ingredients in the dog formula are NOT intended to be used on cats. If you guess how much product should go on a small dog, chances are you won’t guess correctly and the small dog can end up being overdosed or not have enough product on to receive protection. Always make sure you purchase the correct product for the size and species of pets you have at home.

•Your local Vet WANTS you to have the BEST products!

That’s why many local vets have developed programs to help you purchase flea/tick (and heartworm) products from them at for the prices you would pay online. 5 Ways to Prevent Dog Bites

In light of National Dog Bite Prevention Week, we want to take this opportunity to help educate you on ways to avoid being bitten. Being aware of your actions is the best way to make sure you stay bite free!

Keep Your Fingers. Your dogs may be fine with you touching their food, bowls, treats or toys, but that doesn’t mean all dogs feel the same way. You should avoid touching dogs or their items while they are eating or chewing them, especially if they begin growling or showing their teeth.
It’s All in Your Body Language. As humans, it is natural for us to approach each other square – face to face, so we tend to approach dogs the same way. What most people don’t realize is that this behavior in the dog world could be likened to smacking someone in the face. It can be very confrontational and cause a dog to react negatively. Make sure you approach a new dog from an angle, with your hands to your sides.
Watch Their Body Language. If you notice a dog becoming stiff, the hair on its back going up, a lip curl or a growl that means the dog isn’t comfortable and these are the warning signs. Don’t push the dog’s buttons. Unless you are trained in handling fearful or aggressive dogs, you shouldn’t put yourself in a potentially dangerous situation. Dog bites are painful and take a long time to heal.
Kids & Dogs. It is said time and time again that children should never be left unattended with dogs. This is definitely something we tell our clients. You need to monitor all interactions with your kids and dogs. Children move very quickly, have an awkward body language, and make strange noises; these factors may make dogs uneasy about having children around them. You also want to make sure to teach your children how to approach and treat dogs. They should always ask the dog’s owner if they can pet the dog. They should never just run up and hug or pick up a dog. Teaching your children to pet dogs nicely, making sure to stay away from their faces will help your children stay safe.
Breaking Up a Dog Fight. If you are ever in the situation where you need to break up a dog fight, NEVER reach into the middle of the fight. Stay clear of their mouths, collars, and front ends. If you need to, pull their tails to help steer them away from the other dog. If the attacking dog has a leash on, you could use the leash to lift the dog up, off the ground and away from the other dog.
Dogs are Pack Animals. A lot of undesirable behavior comes from your dog not being convinced that you or your family members are above them the pack structure. Many aggressive dogs or biters think they are the boss in one way or another. The biting is typically a way of them asserting themselves.

Top 5 Reasons Pets Go to the Vet on XMas Day

BREA, Calif., Dec. 10/ --While home may be the ideal destination this time of year, many pet owners find that there is no place like the veterinarian's office for the holidays. Unfortunately, the most wonderful time of the year is also one of the most dangerous for pets.
In order to assess the impact of the holidays on pet health, Veterinary Pet Insurance Co. (VPI), the nation's oldest and largest provider of pet health insurance, analyzed claims submitted in 2008 for pets treated on December 25. The company found that last year more than 200 policyholders spent Christmas Day at the veterinarian's office--most with pets receiving treatment for accidental injuries or dietary indiscretion.
Following are the top five Christmas Day claims of 2008:

1. Gastritis/Enteritis
2. Lacerations or Bite Wounds
3. Soft Tissue Trauma
4. Foreign Body Ingestion
5. Chocolate Poisoning

"Christmas Day is the last day most pet owners want to spend at an emergency clinic with a sick or injured pet," said Dr. Carol McConnell, vice president and chief veterinary medical officer for VPI. "Fortunately, many of the claims we receive for conditions treated on Christmas Day can be prevented. Pet owners can enjoy a safe holiday by keeping pets away from treats intended for humans, refraining from introducing their pets to new or unfamiliar foods, and making sure foreign objects such as ornaments and decorations are kept out of pets' reach."

The data, mined from more than 475,000 VPI-insured pets nationwide, reveals that claims treated on Christmas Day skew towards accidents requiring emergency treatment, perhaps because most regular veterinary clinics are closed on December 25. The other 364 days of the year, claims for medical conditions such as skin allergies, ear infections and urinary tract infections prove far more common than claims for the majority of conditions treated on Christmas Day. Only gastritis/enteritis ranked among the top 10 medical claims received by VPI in the full year of 2008. Other claims submitted with a December 25 treatment date included claims for broken bones, gastric torsion, gastric ulcers, torn nails, allergic reactions and cruciate ruptures.

We're Getting Set for Presents 4 Pets

With National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week at hand, the staff at Endless Pawsibilities, LLC is joining forces with the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters (NAPPS) for the “Presents 4 Pets” campaign, a collection drive to benefit pets in shelters and provide items desperately needed to help keep shelters operational, and animals comfortable and safe.

This national program, already underway, will run through the first week of November, coinciding with the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week observed November 1-7. As part of this annual program, we are reaching out to our clients and encouraging you to collect and donate items for this worthy cause.

Through our efforts and your donations last year, we were able to donate over 160 towels, 50 blankets, over 100 pounds each of cat and dog food, a dog crate, tons of cleaning supplies and lots of other goodies to S.A.V.E ( www.save.rescuegroups.org ) and the Toms River Animal Facility (http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/NJ176.html ).
